INTRO: Intro: Foreign ministers and senior officials
from Asia-Pacific nations and Britain met Thursday in
Auckland on the fringes of an economic forum, to
figure out how to help restore peace in East Timor.
As Amy Bickers reports from New Zealand, they say they
will offer support and assistance to United Nations'
peacekeeping efforts and they want Indonesia's
government to know that help is readily available.
Text: Foreign ministers and senior officials from
almost every APEC nation, as well as Britain say they
want to see an end to the violence in East Timor, as
soon as possible.
New Zealand Foreign Minister Don McKinnon says the
group eagerly awaits the findings of a U-N Security
Council team now in Indonesia. He says fears remain
that a withdrawal of U-N officials in East Timor could
spur more violence.
/// MCKINNON ACTUALITY ///
The ministers are very concerned about that real
possibility and hence the view that -- within the
United Nations Security Council -- with the strong
support that is being conveyed from Auckland now, that
any action taken by the security council can be
expedited rapidly. We are very very concerned about
timing, in every respect, on this issue now.
/// END ACTUALITY ///
Mr. McKinnon says Jakarta has made no progress towards
restoring peace in East Timor. (signed)
