State Department Report, Wednesday, September 1, 1999
(Indonesia/ETimor, Iraqi oil/Turkey/earthquake victims) (270) State Department Acting Spokesman Philip Reeker briefed. INDONESIAN MILITARY RESPONSE ON EAST TIMOR IS "SERIOUSLY INADEQUATE" The response of the Indonesian military to renewed militia violence on East Timor is "seriously inadequate" and not in keeping with its agreement of May 5, Reeker said. Although the August 30 balloting to determine whether East Timor will become independent of Indonesia took place without major incident, pro-integration militias resumed their violent activities almost immediately after the voting ended, Reeker said. One UN worker was killed in the post-election violence. Reeker reported that the militias attacked offices of pro-independence parties, impeded access to the port and airport and set up roadblocks to restrict travel in parts of East Timor. Reeker was unable to provide information about what relationship, if any, the Indonesian military has with the militias that want East Timor to stay within Indonesia. He also declined to comment on calls from some quarters of the world community for an international intervention.
