Production Options Could Increase Total Contract Value to $48 Million by 2003

ATK (Alliant Techsystems) (NYSE: ATK) said it has been awarded a contract valued at approximately $25 million from the U.S. Navy to produce the Multi-Function Fuze (MFF). The contract includes options, which if exercised, could increase the total value to $48 million by 2003.
Work on the contract will be conducted by Alliant Precision Fuze Company in Janesville, Wis. Deliveries are expected to begin in April 2000.
The U.S. Navy's next-generation fuze, the MFF will be used in projectiles fired from shipboard gun systems in ship-to-ship, ship-to-air, and ship-to-shore engagements. It can be programmed through its microcomputer to detonate in four ways: in proximity to air targets, at a selected height above a surface target, at a selected time, or upon surface impact. Its versatility will simplify shipboard logistics by allowing one projectile to replace multiple types of ammunition.
The MFF was developed by Motorola's military fuze and sensor division, which was acquired by ATK in 1997.
Mike Coyle, president, Alliant Precision Fuze Company, said the MFF production contract award is a significant win for the company.
"The Multi-Function Fuze is by far the most technically complex fuze we have ever produced," said Coyle. "It has the potential to become a core long- term production program, providing a stable base of high-tech jobs at our Janesville plant."
