31 August 1999 Text: State Dept. on Extension of Abkhazia Peace Force Mandate (Extension will provide "important measure of stability) (230) The State Department announced August 31 that Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze and the Georgian National Security Council had agreed in principle to extend the mandate of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) peacekeeping force in Abkhazia. Following is the State Department text: (begin text) U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of the Spokesman For Immediate Release August 31, 1999 STATEMENT BY JAMES B. FOLEY, DEPUTY SPOKESMAN GEORGIA: EXTENSION OF ABKHAZIA PEACEKEEPING FORCE MANDATE President Eduard Shevardnadze and the Georgian National Security Council have agreed in principle to extension of the mandate of the CIS peacekeeping force in Abkhazia. We anticipate that the Georgian government and the CIS will have no difficulty in agreeing to such an extension. We believe this step will help promote stability in the Gali region and the rest of Abkhazia, and help to protect the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG). We also call attention to the important role of UNOMIG in assisting the Georgian and Abkhaz sides to work toward a resolution of the conflict. We believe the extension of the mandate will provide an important measure of stability in the area, and we encourage the parties to use this opportunity to reach a durable peace settlement.
