Anthony Lake Travels to Ethiopia and Eritrea
(He is traveling at behest of Secretary Albright) (210) By Jane Morse USIA State Department Correspondent Washington -- Former U.S. National Security Advisor Anthony Lake is leading an interagency team to Ethiopia and Eritrea to discuss with officials there the ongoing conflict between those two countries, State Department Spokesman James Rubin announced July 21. Lake began his travel July 21 at the behest of Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, the spokesman said. Lake is expected to consult with representatives of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), including Secretary-General Salim Ahmed Salim. He will also meet with the Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki. "Mr. Lake will discuss modalities put forward by the Organization of African Unity during the recent OAU summit in Algiers for implementing the framework agreement to bring peace to the region," the spokesman said. "We hope this OAU initiative will prove to be an important step towards a resolution of this conflict." Rubin noted that the United States has been devoting a great deal of effort in the last year to helping the two countries find a peaceful resolution to their violent dispute over their 600-mile border.
