LANTIRN Targeting Pods Shipped to Royal Netherlands Air Force Only Six Days After Contract Award
PARIS, FRANCE, June 16th, 1999 -- Six days after Lockheed Martin Electronics & Missiles was awarded a contract, three LANTIRN targeting systems were delivered to the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) for their F-16 aircraft. The contract, awarded May 7, 1999, included the targeting pods and associated pylons, containers, spares, field support, training and an option for future upgrades. With the RNLAF's critical operational requirements for Operation Allied Force, Electronics & Missiles, with the cooperation of the Netherlands government, was able to achieve contract award and delivery of the systems 14 days after being notified of the need for the LANTIRN systems.
The LANTIRN pods are being used in combat by the F-16 Mid-Life Update (MLU) aircraft from Leeuwarden and Twenthe Air Bases, Netherlands, which are the two Dutch air bases that currently fly the updated MLU version of the F-16. These aircraft are assigned to the Belgian-Netherlands Deployed Air Task Force (BATF) at Italy's Amendola Air Base.
The LANTIRN targeting system enables pilots to pinpoint and attack targets from standoff ranges day or night using laser-guided weapons. The combat-proven LANTIRN has been used extensively in Operation Allied Force on U.S. Air Force and NATO F16s and F-15s, and U.S. Navy F-14s to accurately destroy strategic targets. It is the system of choice for eleven allied air forces, as well as the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy.
Lockheed Martin Electronics & Missiles is a world leader in electro-optics, smart munitions, anti armor and air defense systems. The company is an operating element of Lockheed Martin Electronics Sector, based in Bethesda, Maryland.
