IAIs Mata Division and ITL Ltd. develop Infra-Red lighting system to enhance safety for helicopter night formation flying
Jun 10, 1999
An infra-red lighting system to enhance helicopter night formation flying has been developed by Israel Aircraft Industries Ltd. (IAI) Mata Division in collaboration with International Technologies (Lasers) Ltd., of Rishon-Lezion, Israel.
The infra-red lights are added on to the helicopter main rotor blade.
The system has already been qualified for Cobra helicopters and is being qualified for additional helicopter types.
The infra-red light is visible up to ranges of 300 meters to flight crews using night vision goggles. The IR light is undetectable by ground forces.
All tests have shown that rotor blade operations are not affected by the installation of the IR lights. The IR light is operated by a self contained battery for up to 50 hours and operates only in darkness and when the blades are rotating.
