DATE=5/5/99 TYPE=CORRESPONDENT REPORT NUMBER=2-248978 TITLE=AFGHAN/EXPLOSION (S-ONLY) BYLINE=SCOTT ANGER DATELINE=ISLAMABAD CONTENT= VOICED AT: INTRO: A SERIES OF EXPLOSIONS AT AN AMMUNITION DEPOT ROCKED THE AFGHAN CAPITAL, KABUL (WEDNESDAY) DAMAGING NEARBY BUILDINGS. AS CORRESPONDENT SCOTT ANGER REPORTS, AT LEAST ONE PERSON HAS BEEN KILLED AND AT LEAST EIGHT OTHERS INJURED. TEXT: REPORTS SAY THREE EXPLOSIONS HAVE OCCURRED AT A TALEBAN-OPERATED AMMUNITION DEPOT IN THE POPULATED NEIGHBORHOOD OF KHAIRKHANA, IN THE NORTHERN PART OF KABUL. THE CAUSE OF THE BLASTS IS NOT KNOWN AND THE TALEBAN MOVEMENT HAS NOT COMMENTED ON THE INCIDENT. THE HARD-LINE TALEBAN ISLAMIC MOVEMENT IS FIGHTING OPPOSITION GROUPS FOR COMPLETE CONTROL OF AFGHANISTAN. THE MOVEMENT BEGAN IN 1994 AND SWEPT THROUGH THE COUNTRY IN ABOUT TWO-YEARS, CAPTURING THE CAPITAL, KABUL IN SEPTEMBER 1996. SINCE THEN, THEY HAVE MANAGED TO CONTROL ABOUT 90 PERCENT OF AFGHANISTAN WHILE OPPOSITION GROUPS CONTROL THE REST -- MAINLY IN THE NORTH. PEACE NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES HAVE FAILED, LEADING TO CONTINUED FIGHTING IN THE CENTRAL PROVINCES OF THE COUNTRY.
