Hellfire Systems LLC Will Build Hellfire II Missiles for it's Seventh International Customer
ORLANDO, FL, March 24th, 1999 -- The Hellfire Systems Limited Liability Company, a Lockheed Martin/Boeing joint venture, has been awarded a $6.7 million contract by the Government of Turkey to build and deliver 84 Hellfire II air-to-ground tactical missiles with an anti-ship warhead configuration. The order includes training missiles, spares and support equipment.
The contract marks the first international sale of the anti-ship warhead configuration of Hellfire II; the first international sale destined for use on the S-70B Seahawk helicopter; and makes Turkey the seventh foreign nation to buy the Hellfire II.
Production operations at Lockheed Martin facilities in Orlando and Ocala, Florida and Troy, Alabama and Boeing?s facility in Duluth, Georgia will proceed following completion of export license approval, expected early this year.
The Hellfire II is deployed on, or fully compatible with, the AH-64A Apache, AH-64D Longbow Apache, AH-1W Super Cobra, OH-58D Kiowa Warrior and S-70B Seahawk helicopters. The system also is available in ground-, vehicle- and ship-launched versions.
Hellfire II achieves pinpoint accuracy by homing in on reflected laser energy aimed at a target from the launching helicopter, another helicopter or another platform such as a ground vehicle or ship. The system has demonstrated an ability to defeat countermeasures, fly on low trajectories beneath cloud cover and reject false target reflections such as smoke, sand and sea spray.
Originally designed with a tandem warhead suitable for anti-armor missions, an anti-ship warhead, developed by Lockheed Martin and Orlando Technologies, was developed and purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1998.
With headquarters in Orlando, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control is a world leader in electro-optics, smart munitions, anti-armor and air defense systems. The company is an operating element of Lockheed Martin Electronics Sector, based in Bethesda, Maryland.
