Alliant Techsystems Will Relocate Metal Parts Manufacturing Operations From New Jersey to West Virginia
Mar 19, 1999
Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK) said it will relocate its precision metal parts manufacturing operations currently conducted by Ferrulmatic Operations in Totowa, N.J. to its tactical systems production facility at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL) in Rocket Center, W.Va.
The relocation will be phased in over the next 12 months. Alliant said it will work closely with employees of Ferrulmatic Operations to provide assistance during the phased closure and to ensure that the relocation proceeds smoothly. A number of salaried and hourly Ferrulmatic employees will be offered positions at ABL.
Ferrulmatic Operations, which was acquired by Alliant Techsystems in 1993, manufactures metal parts used in 120mm tactical and training tank ammunition supplied by Alliant to the U.S. Army. The company employs approximately 200 people at the facility.
Nick Vlahakis, group vice president, Conventional Munitions, said that while Alliant regrets the loss of work in New Jersey, the relocation could result in approximately 100 new jobs at ABL, where Alliant produces tactical rocket motors, warheads, fabricated metal parts, and composite structures for weapons systems.
Vlahakis said the relocation, which is aimed at strengthening Alliant's competitive position by consolidating manufacturing operations, is part of a trend occurring throughout the aerospace and defense industry.
"A smaller marketplace demands that we look for more efficient ways of doing business, including better utilization of our excess manufacturing capacity," said Vlahakis. "This consolidation will reduce costs and improve operating efficiencies. It is a sound business decision for Alliant -- but more importantly, it's right for the U.S. Department of Defense, which can continue to look to us for low-cost, high-quality munitions products."
Alliant Techsystems is a $1.1 billion aerospace and defense company with approximately 6,300 employees. Headquartered in Hopkins, Minn., the company's business groups are Conventional Munitions, Space and Strategic Systems, and Defense Systems.
