ORBITAL RECEIVES "OUTSTANDING TEAM PLAYER" AWARD ON U.S. AIR FORCE'S F-22 FIGHTER AIRCRAFT PROGRAM
Company Wins Coveted Award from Lockheed Three Years in a Row
(DULLES, VA 19 JANUARY 1998) – Orbital Sciences Corporation (NYSE: ORB) was selected by the Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE: LMT) for the 1998 “Outstanding Team Player” award on the F-22 Raptor air-dominance fighter aircraft program. For the third year in a row, Lockheed recognized Orbital’s contributions to the F-22 program over those of 220 other subcontractors throughout the United States.
Orbital’s Fairchild Defense Division is supplying the F-22 with its state-of-the-art data transfer and mass memory system, the DMM 2000. This next-generation airborne electronics system initializes the aircraft avionics, supplies satellite imagery and map data and loads the specific mission plan. The DMM 2000 also records actual flight data to enable detailed post-mission analysis.
Fairchild Defense pioneered the technology and has continuously refined the design and manufacturing approach for the DMM 2000. The process has resulted in improved functionality and reduced weight while lowering the cost of this vital avionics unit by 60 percent. These challenging improvements were requested from the Lockheed F-22 Integrated Product Team.
Mr. Tom Burbage, Lockheed’s Vice President and General Manager of the F-22 program, said, “Orbital epitomizes the supplier partnership concept of F-22. Their focus on superb cost performance and product delivery single them out as 'the best of the best' on the F-22 program.”
The F-22 Raptor represents the U.S. military’s 21st Century’s air dominance fighter. The F-22 program is ahead of its initial development schedule and is now conducting flight tests with the first two engineering, manufacturing and development aircraft.
Orbital’s Fairchild Defense division manages the development, production, integration and testing of a wide array of advanced electronics and avionics systems for use in military aircraft, helicopters and land vehicles.
Orbital is one of the largest space and information systems companies in the world, with 1998 revenues of $750 million. The company, which is headquartered in Dulles, Virginia, employs 4,500 people at major facilities in nine states and several international locations.
