TEXT: STATE DEPT. ON PKK LEADER ABDULLAH OCALAN
(Wants to see Ocalan brought to justice) (260)

Washington -- The United States wants to see Abdullah Ocalan, the PKK leader arrested in Italy earlier this month, "brought to justice in a way that meets the domestic and international legal requirements of the countries involved in this case," said U.S. State Department spokesman James Rubin.

"The PKK is a terrorist organization and Ocalan must be held accountable for his role in the PKK's terrorist activities."

Following is the text of Rubin's November 23 statement:

    US DEPARTMENT OF STATE

    November 23, 1998

STATEMENT BY JAMES P. RUBIN, SPOKESMAN

    BRINGING OCALAN TO JUSTICE

We again congratulate Italy for accepting its international responsibility to arrest PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan earlier this month. As we have stated repeatedly since then, the United States wants to see Ocalan brought to justice in a way that meets the domestic and international legal requirements of the countries involved in this case. We are working closely with Italy, Turkey and Germany to review the full range of options that would achieve this goal.

The PKK is a terrorist organization and Ocalan must be held accountable for his role in the PKK's terrorist activities. We believe that there is clear evidence linking Ocalan to numerous specific terrorist acts.

The United States remains seriously concerned about the acts of violence perpetrated throughout the world by terrorists. Terrorism of any sort is unacceptable and the international community must be committed to seeing that justice is done.
