Opening Statement of Chairman Bill Delahunt
At a Joint Hearing of the
Subcommittee on International Organizations, Human Rights, and Oversight Committee on Foreign Affairs
and the Subcommittee on the WesternHhemisphere

"Global Polling Data on Latin American Opinion of
United States Policies, Values and People"
March 8, 2007

This joint hearing will come to order.

Thank you all for being here today. This hearing is part of a series on global and regional opinions of the United States. This was provoked by a GAO report from April of 2005 that warned that anti-Americanism was broadening and deepening around the world - and that such anti-Americanism could seriously damage US interests. I thought it would be useful to hear from prominent pollsters about the facts - and I stress facts, not opinions - that they have discovered in their research on this topic.

Today's hearing is a joint one with the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee because its focus is on Latin American views of the US. Our witness today is John Zogby, the President of Zogby International, and one of the most prominent pollsters on Latin America.

I would note that Mr. Zogby has a scheduling conflict and must leave around 4:00 pm. However, I understand that his assistant, Sam Rodgers, will be able to stay and answer questions. Without objection, he will be allowed to do so. Given the time constraints, I would ask my colleagues to keep their opening statements to a minimum, or even refrain from them entirely, so that we can hear directly from Mr. Zogby.

I will now turn to the Ranking Member of my subcommittee, Dana Rohrabacher of California.
