Wicksburg Auxiliary Field No. 1
31.23 North / 85.65 West
This site at Wicksburg AL, near Houston AL and north of Panama City FL, was originally the Wicksburg Auxiliary Army Airfield #1. This WW2-era satellite field for Napier Army Airfield in Dothan conducted advanced & specialized training in single engine aircraft, including P-40 fighters. Apparently, at some point in the postwar era, it was rebuilt to support high-volume helicopter flight training operations at nearby Fort Rucker, the home of Army helicopter flight training. It was apparently closed sometime in the late 1990s, as it is not depicted at all (even as an abandoned airfield) on aeronautical charts, but labeled "Allen Field" on USGS topo maps. It is sometimes termed "Allen Army Airfield" but this nomenclature is more properly associated with Allen AFF at Fort Greely in Alaska.
