By the end of September 2001 American and Pakistani military officials had discussed the possibility of American use of five airfields in Pakistan: Peshawar, Quetta, Dalbandin, Pasni, and Chitral. Ultimately, Peshawar was not among the four bases selected for Americanuse.

PAF Peshawar is one of ten Major Operational Bases (MOB) of the Pakistani Air Force. it is a fully functional bases from which PAF aircraft operate during peacetime and wartime. This air base, located at Bareder, is in the northwestern part of Pakistan near the Afghan border.

From 1922 to 1940, Royal Air Force Station Peshawar provided close support to British army units which included field regiments in the North West Frontier. The US used this base during the early years of the Cold War. Gary Powers, the American spy plane pilot shot down by the Soviets in 1960, had taken off from there. The base about 20 miles from Peshawar, a city with large numbers of Afghan refugees and pro-Taliban Pakistanis.

PAF Base Peshawar's significance as a strategically vital airfield has not diminished. It continues to undertake important border air defence operations necessitated since the 1979 Soviet of Afghanistan. The officers' mess has lost none of its nostalgic charm for PAF veterans and its tennis courts continue to host the premier national class championships each year. The Peshawar Golf Course, PAF's prized possession and boasting some of the country's best fairways, is proudly managed by the Peshawer base.
