Nickell Barracks Training Center
Nickell Barracks Training Center is a Kansas Army National Guard facility in Salina, Kansas. It is also known as the Kansas Training Center, Nickell Hall KNG Regional Training Center, Nickell Barracks or Nickell Hall. Phase I annual training is conducted at Nickell Barracks in conjunction with eight other States in Total Army School System (TASS) Region F (Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico). Training includes classroom instruction in Training Management, Operations, Common Core Medical Tasks, Nuclear - Biological - Chemical (NBC), Weapons, Communications and a field training exercise to conduct Map Reading and Land Navigation.
Two facilities are dedicated in the name of Joe Nickell: Nickell Memorial Armory in Topeka, and Nickell Barracks in Salina. Lieutenant General Joe Nickell served as the Adjutant General of Kansas for more than 21 years, culminating an illustrious career as state legislator, lawyer, newspaperman, radio commentator, photographer, historian and soldier. In recognition of his contributions and value of service to the State of Kansas, he was promoted to Lieutenant General in July of 1970, making him the only Adjutant General of Kansas to attain that rank. His leadership while Adjutant General of Kansas resulted in the construction of 58 new Army National Guard Armories throughout Kansas.
The Red Cross Kansas Disaster Institute offers a range of classes from Basic to Advanced levels to enable both new and experienced disaster volunteers to increase their knowledge base and fulfill requirements to move up in the system. The Institute is held on the grounds of the Kansas National Guard Armory Training Center in Salina, KS.
