Gricignano Support Site

The Naples Improvement Initiative (NII) is the largest quality-of-life improvement project in Europe. This 700 million-dollar project will affect virtually every military command, all military members and their families, and DOD civilians in the greater Naples area. The project began after the Naval Support Activity, located in Agnano, was shaken by a sizeable seismic event. The base infrastructure was damaged and it was decided that the Navy community in Naples was in desperate need of new facilities. After years of deliberation, the decision was made to build a support site, consisting of housing, schools and all aspects of community support, in the town of Gricignano, about 15 miles north of Capodichino.

In February 1996 construction commenced in Gricignano, the location of the Support Site. This lease program is being implemented in four phases. The first increment includes an elementary school, a high school, and 864 housing units. The new housing units have many amenities of stateside living with 110-volt electrical current, potable, water, central heating and air conditioning, and full size appliances, including dishwashers. All of the 876 available housing units were finished in the summer of 2001.

Increment II includes the construction of many community support facilities. Presently open are a new Child Development Center, a community Fire Station, and the base Main Gate Complex which houses NSA Security and the Human Resources Office. Still under construction is the Village Forum complex. This facility will contain the new Navy Lodge Hotel, a NEX Mini-mart, Laundry and Video Store, Motor Vehicle Office, Personal Property Office, Family Service Center, a new Chapel, Library, Community Center and Youth Center. The Village Forum is expected to be operational in the summer of 2002. Other increment II facilities under construction include an Auto Hobby Shop, a Public Works facility, POV lot and facility, Environmental facility, and AFRTV's new facility. All of these buildings are expected to be open and operational during the calendar year 2002.

Increment III includes the construction of a new state-of-the-art Medical/Dental Facility for the community. This 170,000 square foot, three-story facility will have a dedicated central energy plant, will offer 20 inpatient beds and outpatient and clinical services. The Hospital is expected to be operational by the fall/winter of calendar year 2002.

Increment IV provides the final touches to completing the support community at Gricignano. The facilities associated with this increment include a new Retail Center, that will house the NEX Main Store, a Mall, and the Commissary. Other facilities include a Fitness Center with outdoor pool, a Bowling Center with a Morale, Welfare and Recreation Club, a Veterinary Clinic and Dog Kennel, an Enlisted Bachelor Lodge, and an Auto Service Center. The expected completion of all facilities is the summer of 2004.
