Farmingdale WETS - Weekend Training Site
Nike Battery NY-24 at Farmingdale, NY was located in close proximity to Republic Aviation's Farmingdale, Long Island plant. The Launcher Area in North Amityville is presently utilized as a US Army Reserve center. The missile magazines have been paved over, though the double fences surrounding this area are still intact. The Control Area in Amityville is used as a New York Army National Guard training site. The administration building and barracks are intact and in use by the NYARNG.
The National Guard Drug Demand Reduction Program (DDRP) is a community-based, anti-drug program. The National Guard provides trained individuals who are proficient in planning, organization and logistics. Trained facilitators are often key in the initial, development stages of a coalition. National guardsmen serve as public speakers and perform extensive volunteer work. They also National Guardsmen function as role models and mentors for the community's youth. Support is provided regionally based in the following locations: New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Watertown, Saratoga Springs, Peekskill, and Farmingdale.
The largest of the 130 national cemeteries is the Calverton National Cemetery, on Long Island, near Farmingdale, N.Y. That cemetery conducts more than 7,000 burials each year.
