Naval Support Activity Capodichino
Capodichino is located approximately 12 km northeast of the main base, NAVSUPPACT, Naples. The US Naval Support Activity Capodichino provides and maintains facilities and services for support of the air facility, fleet shorebased units and tenants, outgoing/incoming military flights in the European theater and CONUS. The Capodichino US military side of the airport shares runways with the Italian civilian side of the airport.
Capodichino, better known as "Capo", is the main base. This is where the Fitness Center, movie theater, NEX Mini Mart, The Uniform shop, library, the Flight Deck Lounge, Capo Landing Food Court, and the Underground Liberty Center are located.
The Naples Improvement Initiative (NII) is the largest quality-of-life improvement project in Europe. This 700 million-dollar project will affect virtually every military command, all military members and their families, and DOD civilians in the greater Naples area. The project began 17 years ago after the Naval Support Activity, located in Agnano, was shaken by a sizeable seismic event. The base infrastructure was damaged and it was decided that the Navy community in Naples was in desperate need of new facilities. After years of deliberation with our Italian hosts, the decision was made to locate the operational aspect of the community in Capodichino, site of the civilian airport, which has shared its runways with the U.S. Navy for many years.
The 60-acre site in Capodichino was designed as a campus-style complex. With the aid of a pedestrian walkway 'spine' all facilities are within ten minutes of each other. Presently, the Capodichino site consists of two new Bachelor Housing Facilities, a transient Bachelor Lodge, a Navy Exchange Mini-mart, a Morale, Welfare and Recreation complex with a Club, Theater, Library, Chapel and state-of-the-art Gymnasium with indoor swimming pool, a new Dining Facility, a Medical and Dental Clinic, two Administration facilities, a Child Development Center and two Parking Structures for 1430 vehicles. Recently complete is the new Air Cargo Facility adjacent to the Supply Facility. Two additional buildings were completed by the Fall of 2001 are the Air Operations and Passenger Facility and the new Public Works Facility. By the Spring of 2003, all remaining construction will be complete including a third Bachelor Housing Facility, a third Administration Facility, expansions to the Parking Structures for an addition of 600 spaces and the renovation of an Aircraft Hangar.
