It is named in honor of PFC George W. Elmore, a Browning Automatic Rifleman. On 26 February 1951, Elmore left the cover of his position and moved forward into the open to where he could more effectively take the North Korean enemy under fire. Freed from the fire that had pinned them, the remaining members of Elmore's squad moveed forward, but Elmore suffered wounds that would cost him his life. For his selfless action, George Elmore would posthumously receive his country's second highest award for bravery, the Navy Cross.
