Fixed Wing ARNG Aviation Training Site (FWAATS)
Benedum Airport, Bridgeport, WV
The Fixed Wing ARNG Aviation Training Site (FWAATS), Benedum Airport, Bridgeport, WV trains aviators in the C-12, C-23, and C-26 aircraft for the Total Army with plans to expand to Naval students. The fielding of the UC-35 Ultra will lead to jet aircraft training at the FWAATS. During 1998 the unit qualified over 100 pilots and flight engineers in support of the Total Army with over 1,700 accident and incident free flight hours flown.
An engineer exercise with the National Guard and contractors involving an 1800-foot extension to the Benedum Airport runway has been ongoing since 1994. Over 11,000,000 cubic yards of material has been moved. Future plans include the movement of a highway and property development for an aerospace complex. This exercise is used to train engineer equipment operators and fulfills a need for the expansion of the Benedum Airport at the same time.
