90th Flying Training Squadron [90th FTS]
The 90th Flying Training Squadron traces its origins to the 90th Pursuit Squadron (Interceptor) which was constituted on 13 January 1942. It activated on 9 February 1942 at Selfridge Field, MI, and was assigned to the 80th Pursuit (later, 80th Fighter) Group. It was subsequently redesignated as the 90th Fighter Squadron on 15 May l942 and as the 90th Fighter Squadron (Single Engine) on 1 July 1942.
Flying the P-47 (1942-1943); P-40 (1943-1944); and the P-47 (1944-1945) aircraft from locations in India and Burma, the 90th saw combat in the CBI from 16 September 1943-29 April 1945. During that time, the squadron was redesignated as the 90th Fighter Squadron, Single Engine, on 28 February 1944. It inactivated on 3 November 1945 at Camp Kilmer, NJ.
Redesignated as the 90th Flying Training Squadron on 25 May 1972, it reactivated on 1 Jan 1973 at Shepppard AFB, TX, under the 80th Flying Training Wing. There, operating the T-38, the 90th FTS was tasked with conducting undergraduate pilot training for USAF and students from selected nations from 1973-1981; and beginning in October 1981, with Euro-NATO joint pilot training.
