86th Fighter Weapons Squadron [86th FWS]
The 86th Fighter Weapons Squadron conducts the USAF Air-to-Ground Weapon System Evaluation Program, also known as Combat Hammer. This program assesses operational performance of fighter and bomber weapon systems and precision guided munitions in realistic combat scenarios against first-look targets.
The squadron hosts 14 A/G WSEP deployments annually at the Eglin and Utah test ranges. Weapons evaluated include: AGMs 65, 88, 130, 142; GBUs 10, 12, 15, 24, 27; and the EGBU-15. Future evaluations will include JDAM, WCMD CBU, JSOW, and JASSM.
Squadron personnel verify weapon system performance, determine reliability, evaluate capability and limitations, identify deficiencies, recommend corrective actions, and maintain CAF-wide data to support USAF decision makers.
The squadron investigates missile envelopes and evaluates capabilities and limitations to determine future firing requirements. They provide liaison support for pre-deployment, employment and redeployment of ACC, USAFE, PACAF, ANG, and USAFR forces participating in WSEP.
The squadron also conducts investigative firings of precision guided munitions to address CAF employment issues and to support developmental and operation test and evaluation.
