65th Airlift Squadron [65th AS]
The 65th Airlift Squadron was originally constituted as the 65th Troop Carrier Squadron on 7 December 1942. It was activated on 12 December 1942 at Bowman Field, KY, and assigned to the 403d Troop Carrier Group.
The squadron was reassigned to Fifth Air Force, on 26 July 1943; to the 54th Troop Carrier Wing, on 13 August 1943; to the 433d Troop Carrier Group, on 9 November 1943; and to the 403d Troop Carrier Group, on 20 February 1945. During the course of WWII, the 65th waas tasked with aerial transportation and evacuation in the South and Southwest Pacific, from 26 July 1943-c. August 1945. Aircraft flown by the unit were the C-47(1943-1945) and the C-46(1944-1945). The squadron inactivated on 27 January 1946 at Clark Field, LUzon.
The squadron reactivated in the Reserve on 9 August 1947 at Richmond AAB, VA, operating the C-46 and assigned to the 419th Troop Carrier Group.
Upon its reassignement to the 403d Troop Carrier Group on 27 June 1949, the squadron was redesignated as the 65th Troop Carrier Squadron, Medium.
The 65th was ordered to active service on 1 April 1951, providing aerial transportation and evacuation in Korea from 9 May to 31 December 1952. The C-119 was the aircraft flown by the squadron in 1952. It inactivated on 1 January 1953 at Ashiya AB, Japan.
The 65th reactivated in the Reserve on 1 January 1953 at Portland International Airport, operating the C-119 and assigned to the 403d Troop Carrier Group. It was reassigned to the 442d Troop Carrier Group, on 16 November 1957 and to the 403d Troop Carrier Wing, on 14 April 1959.
The 65th was ordered to active service on 28 October 1962 and relieved from active duty on 28 November 1962. It was reassigned to the 929th Troop Carrier Group on 11 January 1963. Discontinued, it inactivated, on 1 July 1966 at Davis Field, OK.
Redesignated 65th Airlift Squadron on 20 Feb 1992, the 65th AS reactivated on 10 March 1992 at Hickam AFB, HI, as a unit subordinate to the 15th Air Base Wing. Operating the C-135 and tasked with worldwide aerial transportation, the 65th AS was reassigned to the 15th Operations Group on 13 April 1992.
