52nd Munitions Support Squadron (52 MUNSS)

Beginning in July 2002, the 52nd Fighter Wing began active participation in the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Logistics Review designed to streamline and improve USAF logistical and maintenance processes. As a result, the 52nd Munitions Support Squadron was inactivated and in its place the 701st Munitions Support Squadron was activated.

Nuclear weapons were under the control of the 52nd Munitions Support Squadron, whose mission is to positively control, maintain, account for, and release US munitions to the Belgian Air Force's 10th Wing Tactical in support of it's NATO strike mission. Kleine Brogel was the home of Belgian's 10th Wing Tactical, which included a squadron of F-16 fighter aircraft trained to use nuclear weapons. Kleine Brogel Air Base in Belgium had installed new storage vaults for nuclear weapons for use by NATO.

Members of the 52nd Logistics Support Squadron received the 1999 US Air Force Maintenance Effectiveness Award. The logistics training flight was lauded by the 1999 US Air Forces in Europe Nuclear Surety Inspection team for guiding the 52nd Munitions Support Squadron at Kleine Brogel Air Base to a zero training deficient unit.
