52nd Airlift Squadron [52nd AS]
The 52nd Airlift Squadron was inactivated on 16 September 1997. The last type of aircraft the squadron flew was the C-130E.
The squadron was originally constituted as 52nd Transport Squadron in May 1942 and activated on 15 June 1942. The squadron was assigned to 63rd Transport (later 63rd Troop Carrier) Group, from 15 June 1942 to 14 April 1944. It was redesignated 52nd Troop Carrier Squadron on 4 July 1942. The unit was disbanded 14 April 1944.
It was reconsituted and redesignated 52nd Troop Carrier Squadron, Medium, 10 May 1949 and assigned to 63rd Troop Carrier Group, 27 June 1949-9 May 1951. It was later ordered to active service on 1 May 1951 whereupon it was inactivated on 9 May 1951.
The squadron was redesignated 52nd Troop Carrier Squadron, Heavy, 19 March 1953 and reactivated 20 June 1953 and assigned to 63rd Troop Carrier Group, 20 June 1953 (attached for operational control to 322nd Air Division, ca. 29 January-ca. 1 August 1960 and ca. January 1962-). The squadron was then reassigned to 3rd Troop Carrier (later, 63rd Military Airlift) Wing, on 18 January 1963, though it remained under operational control of 322nd Air Division.
It was redesignated 52nd Military Airlift Squadron 8 January 1966. From 8 January 1967 to 8 February 1969, it was assigned to 436th Military Airlift Wing, but remained under the operational control of 322nd Air Division. It was subsequently inactivated in February 1969.
The squadron was then assigned to 63rd Military Airlift Wing, on 1 June 1988. Reactivated on 1 June 1992, the squadron was assigned to 63rd Operations Group, 1 January- 30 September 1992. Inactivated in September 1992, 52nd Airlift Squadron was activated once again on 1 May 1994, and assigned to the 347th Operations Group until 16 September 1997 whereupon it was inactivated.
