425th Fighter Squadron [425th FS]

The 425th Fighter Squadron traces its lineage to the 425th Night Fighter Squadron which was constituted on 23 November 1943. The squadron was activated on 1 December 1943 at Orlando AB, FL, and assigned to the 481st Night Fighter Operational Training Group. It was subsequently reassigned to Ninth Air Force on 23 May 1944; to IX Air Defense Command, on 10 June 1944; to the 471st Fighter Wing, on 20 June 1944; to IX Air Defense Command, on 6 August 1944; to XIX Tactical Air Command, on 7 October 1944; to Ninth Air Force, on 7 July 1945; to Fourth Air Force, on 9 September 1945; to Air Defense Command, on 21 March 1946; and to Fourth Air Force, on 31 July 1946.

The 425th saw combat in the ETO, from July 1944-8 May 1945, operating from locations in England, France, and Germany. The squadron then took on an air defense mission from September 1945-August 1947. During this period, the squadron operated YP-61 (1944); A-20 (1944); P-70 (1944); and P-61 (1944-1946, 1946-1947) aircraft. The 425th inactivated on 25 August 1947 at McChord Field, WA.

Redesignated as the 425th Tactical Fighter Training Squadron on 22 August 1969, the squadron reactivated on 15 October 1969 at Williams AFB, AZ. Assigned to the 58th Tactical Fighter Training (later, 58th Tactical Training) Wing, the 425th began flying for the first time the F-5 aircraft. It began training international personnel in the F-5 in October 1969. The unit was reassigned to the 405th Tactical Training Wing on 29 August 1979. The squadron inactivated on 1 September 1989.

The 425th was redesignated as the 425th Fighter Squadron on 1 December 1992 and reactivated on 30 December 1992 at Luke AFB, AZ. Assigned to the 58th Operations Group, the squadron began operating the F-16. It began assuming a training mission for international personnel in the F-16 c. January 1993.

The 425th was reassigned to the 56th Fighter Wing's Operations Group on 1 April 1994.
