3rd Combat Communications Group [3rd CCG]
There has been a mobile communications unit at Tinker since June 1952 with the activation of the 3rd Airways and Air Communications Service Squadron, Mobile. The unit was redesignated 3rd Mobile Communications Squadron in July 1961 under the Air Force Communications Service and upgraded to the 3rd Mobile Communications Group on May 20, 1964. It was redesignated as the 3rd Combat Communications Group on March 24, 1976; as the 3rd Combat Information Systems Group on August 13, 1984 and as the 3rd Combat Communications Group, on October 1, 1986.
The 3rd CCG took part in the following operations: the Cuban Missile Crisis; Vietnam War; U.S. involvement in the Dominican Republic; U.S. support to Israel during that country's Yom Kippur War; Elf One in the Arabian Gulf Region; Urgent Fury in Grenada; Eagle Look in the Middle East; Just Cause and Nimrod Dancer in Panama; Desert Shield and Desert Storm; Uphold Democracy in Haiti and Joint Endeavor in Bosnia. The 3rd CCG also deployed as part of: Operation Southern Watch in Southwest Asia; Provide Promise in Italy; Provide Comfort in Turkey; and the United Nations Mission in Haiti and Joint Endeavor in Bosnia.
In addition, the 3rd CCG has also provided support to DEA drug interdiction missions such as Operation Constant Vigil and Joint Task Force - 4 while members of the 3rd CCG provided emergency support to Guam, Florida and Hawaii following hurricanes. It has also provided deployed in support to Washington State following the eruption of Mount St. Helens; to Oklahoma City after the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building; and provided Space Shuttle mission navigation support and national air traffic services during the controllers' strike in 1981.
