174th Fighter Squadron [174th FS]
The 174th Fighter Squadron traces its lineage to the Army Air Force's 386th Fighter Squadron, activated in 1943 and inactivated in 1945. It was redesignated the 174th Fighter Squadron and allocated to the National Guard on May 24, 1946. The 174th is still the flying squadron at the 185tgh Fighter Wing. The squadron has flown single seat fighter aircraft since it's inception.
The 386th had been based at several sites in Europe during W.W.II. The 174th was activated for service during the Korean conflict in 1951, and the 185th was called to Active duty again in 1968 for Vietnam, where the 174th flew more combat sorties than any other Air National Guard unit involved in that conflict.
The unit also participated in Operation Provide Comfort II patrolling the skies over Northern Iraq in 1993 and 1996.
