173rd Fighter Wing [173rd FW]
Official redesignation for the 173 Fighter Wing (173 FW) came on 27 June 1996. There is no previous history for the 173 FW as a unit designation.
The 173rd FW is the newest wing in the USAF.
As a result of proposed changes in Air Force force structure, announced in March 2000, the 173rd FW was scheduled to gain seven F-15A/B aircraft while incurring no manpower changes.
The 173 FW vision and mission remain constant during its relatively short history:
- Vision: Citizen Soldiers building a World Class Training Center to serve our community, the state of Oregon, and the nation.
- Mission: To train the best air-to-air combat pilots, train flight doctors, and serve the state and nation in times of peace and war.
The 173d Fighter Wing is located at Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls, Oregon. The 173d Fighter Wing provides training for new pilots and pilot instructors on Air to Air combat tactics and basic flight instruction on the F-15. Also, Flight Surgeons, Dentists, and Optometrists receive specialized training on treating the unique physiological problems of pilots.
