13th Airlift Squadron [13th AS]

The 13th Airlift Squadron was originally constituted as the 13th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron on 9 June 1942. It was activated on 20 June 1942 at Colorado Springs, CO, and assigned to the 3d Photographic (later, 3d Photographic Reconnaissance and Mapping) Group (though attached to the 1st Bombardment Wing, 2 December 1942-16 February 1943, and to Eighth Air Force, 16 February-7 July 1942), operating the P-38/F-5 and the L-4.

It was redesignated as the 13th Photographic Squadron (Light) on 6 February 1943. During 1943, the squadron stopped flying the L-4 and flew the Spitfire. It was reassigned to the 7th Photographic Reconnaissance and Mapping Group, from 7 July 1943-21 November 1945 and was redesignated as the 13th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron on 13 November 1943. 1945 saw the squadron fly the P-51 aircraft. From 28 March 1943-26 April 1945, the squadron saw combat in ETO. It inactivated on 1 December 1945 at Camp Kilmer, NJ.

Redesignated as the 13th Reconnaissance Squadron, Photographic, on 11 March 1947, it reactivated in the Reserve on 6 July 1947 at Rome AAFld, NY, as a unit subordinate to the 65th Reconnaissance Group. It inactivated on 27 June 1949 at Chemung County Airport.

Redesignated as the 13th Troop Carrier Squadron, Medium, on 26 May 1952, it reactivated in the Reserve on 14 June 1952 at Mitchel AFB, NY, and was assigned to the 65th Troop Carrier Group, operating the C-46 aircraft. It inactivated on 1 April 1953.

Redesignated as the 13th Military Airlift Squadron on 14 July 1987, it reactivated on 1 October 1987 at Kadena AB, Japan, flying the C-12 and was assigned to the 374th Tactical Airlift Wing. The 13th was tasked with providing intra theater airlift for high-ranking PACAF and civilian officials and small mission-essential equipment, until 1993.

Redesignated as the 13th Airlift Squadron on 1 April 1992, it was reassigned to the 316th Airlift Support Group, and to the 18th Operations Group, on 1 June 1992.

The 13th AS was reassigned to the 438th Operations Group, on 1 October 1993, relocating to McGuire AFB, NJ; and to the 305th Operations Group, on 1 October 1994.
