Group Lower Mississippi River
Group Lower Mississippi River was commissioned in 1966 in Memphis, TN. Group LMR differs from coastal groups in that the primary mission is Aids to Navigation. Although it maintains a 24-hr communications watch, search and rescue and law enforcement is typically carried out by local, state, and federal agencies. The Group hosts CGC KANKAKEE, SSD Memphis, and Electronic Support Detachment Memphis. It loans boat storage/maintenance space to MSO Memphis. It maintains and places 3,500 buoys and 860 shore aids. The Group averages 128 SAR cases and 117 "non-SAR" cases annually. Its operating area covers the lower Mississippi River between mile 155 and 813 (St. James, LA to Blytheville, AR); the Arkansas River and all navigable waterways connected to it between its mouth and the head of navigation; the Atchafalaya River between the river's junction with the Lower Old River south to the Krotz Springs U. S. Highway 190 bridge; the Red River between its mouth and its head of navigation; the Ouachita and Black rivers; and Lake Texoma (ATON only). Commercial maritime traffic continues year-round.
