Group Los Angeles - Long Beach
The mission of the Group Operations Department at Marine Safety Office/Group Los Angeles-Long Beach is to always be prepared to assist mariners in distress and to enforce the laws of the United States on the sea. The Group has patrol boats in Newport Beach, Marina Del Rey, Channel Islands Harbor and Santa Barbara. Also, there are search and rescue stations in Los Angeles, Channel Islands Harbor, and Morro Bay. Finally, Aids to Navigation (ANT) Teams in Los Angeles and the Channel Islands manage and maintain all the ATON in our area of responsibility.
There are three Small Boat Stations attached to MSO/GRU LALB. Station LALB, Station Channel Islands, & Station Morro Bay. These three units cover an area from the Monterey County line south to San Diego County line and out 200 nautical miles for a total of 64,000 square miles. They each have different types of boats at their disposal. Because of the weather and bar conditions Morro Bay has a 47ft UTB and 21ft RHI. Station Channel Islands also has the weather concerns so they have a 44ft MLB, 41ft UTB and a 21ft RHI. Station LALB does not have the weather or bar constraints so they have three 41ft UTB's and a 21ft RHI. The primary mission of our small boat stations is search and rescue but they also carry out the rest of the Coast Guard Missions; Search and Rescue, Law Enforcement, Environmental Protection, Aids to Navigation, Military Preparedness.
