Group Grand Haven

Today, Grand Haven boasts two brand new Coast Guard facilities, but its relationship with the Coast Guard goes back to 1932 when Grand Haven welcomed its own cutter, the Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba, to its harbor. Unfortunately, less than 11 years later, on June 13, 1943, the Escanaba would sink under wartime conditions, a victim of an explosion which claimed all but two of the 103 crewmembers aboard.

The present-day operational missions and duties of Group and Station Grand Haven are as challenging as one might expect from this location on the Great Lakes. There is never a dull moment as boating activities, fishing and tourism bring hundreds of visitors to the area each year. Search and rescue is by far the most active mission during the months of March through November. However, boating safety, marine-environmental protection and law enforcement keep units busy throughout the winter months as well, so the station is open and active all year long.

Grand Haven enjoys a diverse climate with four distinct seasons. Summer temperatures average in the mid-80s, then turn cool in October. Snow typically falls by November and remains a factor until March.
