Activities San Diego

Consisting of helicopters, small boats, cutters, aids to navigation, marine safety inspections and much more, Activities San Diego is responsible for Coast Guard operations from the Mexican border northward to above San Mateo Pt., and offshore as far as 200 miles. Under certain circumstances, search and rescue operations can even be extended into Mexican waters.

The annual workload of San Diego's Coast Guard men and women is surprisingly large. Last year, personnel racked up nearly 5,000 flight hours and spent approximately 5,500 hours underway on boats. They successfully concluded nearly 600 search and rescue cases and conducted 300 law enforcement and safety boardings. Nearly 70 primary aids to navigation and the Point Loma lighthouse, which guide mariners safely on their way, were maintained in top notch condition.

In 1998, Activities San Diego personnel were responsible for saving 100 lives, assisting another 670 others and saving over $11.4 million in property. Additionally, over 200 illegal migrants were interdicted, 1000 lbs. of cocaine were seized, 110 marine casualties were investigated, 309 pollution reports were responded to, and 225 vessels were inspected.
