Joint Reserve Unit

The U.S. Joint Forces Command Joint Reserve Unit is headquartered in Norfolk, VA, with working locations in Norfolk, Suffolk and Hampton (Hampton Roads area), all seamless with USJFCOM daily activities. U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Army and Air National Guard, and Coast Guard Reserve Components augment and extend capabilities of the command to respond to peacetime domestic emergencies and worldwide contingencies.

It is one of only three joint-service reserve component support units at joint commands. U.S. Transportation Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill., and U.S. Space Command, Peterson A.F.B., Colo., have similar JRUs.

The Joint Staff approved the JRU concept in 1995. USJFCOM, then U.S. Atlantic Command, implemented their JRU in 1996, coalescing a loose association of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps reservists under one headquarters for administration, training and command support.

The JRU mission expanded to more than 590 billets recently, reflecting its parent command's evolving role in the Department of Defense. Oct. 1, 2000, Coast Guard and National Guard elements joined JRU component services to support civilian and other government agencies with national emergency response.

Both new elements have particular expertise with a wide range of domestic contingencies including oil spills and the effects of chemical, biological and radiological weapons.
