Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR)
The SBU's Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR SBU), which was established as a functional element within the Headquarters of the Security Service of Ukraine on December 28, 1991, carries out intelligence activities to ensure the national security in the spheres which are vital for Ukraine.
The main task of the GUR SBU is to safeguard the person, the state, and the society against possible external threats by assisting with the following:
- formation and implementation of both domestic and international policies of Ukraine;
- solving problems relating to defense potentials, social and economic development, and science and technology progress; and
- finding ways of dealing with other questions associated with the national security of Ukraine and safeguarding its interests abroad.
It has been also determined that one of the key tasks of GUR SBU is to support the functioning of Ukrainian establishments abroad and to provide for the secure stay of their employees and members of their families, as well as other Ukrainian citizens sent abroad on a tour of duty in cases when they are aware of state secrets.
Combating international organized crime, in particular terrorism and drugs trafficking, is yet another priority in GUR's activities.
