The U.S. DEA’s Sensitive Investigative Unit in Chiang Mai is a vetted task force comprised of investigators from the Royal Thai Police Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB); the Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB); and the Provincial Police Narcotics Suppression Unit (PPNSU). SIU and other NSB officers receive specialized training in DEA’s training facilities in Quantico, Virginia in addition to funding for equipment and training from the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.

Royal Thailand Police Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) can be traced back to 1961. The Police Department established Sub-Division 7 under Crime Suppression Division, responsible exclusively for narcotics investigations, interrogation and suppression. The Police Narcotics Suppression Center was established in 1973 for coordination and command center for narcotics suppression and investigation. The Narcotics Suppression Office created in 1990 with 286 personal, The Narcotics Suppression Office was upgraded to NSB in 1992.

Sensitive Investigative Units (SIUs), first established in 1998, are usually comprised of Royal Thai Police Narcotics Suppression Bureau Officers and Office of Narcotics Control Board personnel. Units identify, disrupt and/or dismantle large drug trafficking organizations that impact Asia and the United States. They identify and seize trafficker assets, and share narcotics intelligence developed during theinvestigations with the respective SIU Units and DEA offices worldwide.

The U.S. Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Thailand is represented by the Regional Director of the DEA Far East Region. The DEA’s stated mission is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States. It seeks to bring to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction, the organizations and principal members of those organizations involved in growing, manufacturing or distributing controlled substances that appear in or are destined for illicit trafficking in the United States. It also recommends and supports non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of illicit controlled substances on both the domestic and international markets. In carrying out its mission, the DEA is designated as the lead agency responsible for the development of the U.S. Government’s drug enforcement strategy, programs, planning and evaluations.

In Thailand, DEA supports the Royal Thai Government’s counter narcotics efforts, while targeting drug trafficking organizations responsible for smuggling controlled substances into the United States and the international market. The DEA has offices in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Udorn, Thailand. The area of responsibility for these three offices extends beyond Thailand’s borders and encompasses both Cambodia and Laos since the DEA has no personnel stationed in these countries at the present time.
