National Intelligence Agency (NIA)

The National Intelligence Agency (NIA) is a government department under the Prime Minister's Office. It is the only national civilian news unit in Thailand. The government in the period of Field Marshal P. Pibulsongkram saw that Thailand needs to have government agencies that supervise and process intelligence both in the normal and secret ways. The government therefore established Department of the Civil Service under the Council of Ministers of Political Affairs on January 1, 1954, with the appointment of Police General Pha Siyanon, Director-General of the police at that time. Was the first director of the Department of Civil Service. Later, in the period of Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat, the name was changed to the Department of State Affairs.

The government set up the Department of Administrative Intelligence under the Thai Cabinet on January 1, 1954. On December 2, 1959 the department changed its name to the Central Intelligence Department and then during the government of Prime Minister Perm Tinsolnonda changed its name again, this time to the National Intelligence Agency. The Department of Central Information on December 2, 1959 and the name was changed again in the government of General Prem Tinsulanonda as the National Intelligence Agency. In 1985, the "National Intelligence Law" was enacted in Thailand, and according to the National Intelligence Agency, it became the main agency in Thailand in this field in Thailand. Since 30 August 1985, it was a national intellgience unit directly to the Prime Minister. Although until 2016 the agency still had difficulty operating freely with the country’s military intelligence agencies. In 2017, a plan was devised to unite all intelligence agencies into a single intelligence agency, but the plans were not implemented. In the year 2019, the National Intelligence Coordination Center was established as an internal organization.

The National Intelligence Agency of Thailand is entrusted with the coordinating intelligence on counter-terrorism and maintains close communications with foreign governments to suppress terrorism. Since 11th September 2001, the Agency has stepped up its effort to closely monitor international developments related to counter-terrorism and checking background information of suspicious groups travelling in and out of the country.

In 1985, the National Intelligence Act, BE 2528 (1985) made the NIA the leading Thai intelligence agency. The powers and duties of the National Intelligence Agency are set out in Article 5 of the National Intelligence Act 2562, the Official Information Act 2540, the Regulations of the Prime Minister's Office on National Security 2009, and Regulation on confidentiality of the government, 2544 B.E.
