National Security Force (NSF) (Quwat al-Amn al-Watani)
The National Security Force (NSF), which falls under the umbrella of the General Security Service per the May 1994 Cairo agreement, is the PA's largest security service. Originally drawn from the ranks of the Palestine Liberation Army (PLA), and augmented by local recruitment, the NSF stands at an estimated 14,000 troops, and is the closest approximation to an "army" that the PA is permitted.
As the primary security instrument of the PA, the NSF is charged with maintaining the security of Palestinian-controlled areas and guarding against external threats. Specifically, the NSF is responsible for guarding checkpoints, manning the Israeli-Palestinian Joint Patrols, and participating in other security operations.
Nasr Yusef, the initial head of the NSF, was succeeded by Saeb Ajez, and, more recently Abdul Razek al-Majiada, with Gen. Hajj Ismail commanding forces in the West Bank.
