Radiant Argon Hyper-Spectral Imagery (HSI) Demonstration has been a very successful developmental "science project" that recently completed its flight test. The HSI Palette was installed in an ATARS configured FA-18. This was the first time that a sensor of this type has ever flown in a tactical jet aircraft. The flight test article was a camera assembly and a hardened PC on a pallet installed in the glass nose of our Advanced Tactical Air Reconnaissance System (ATARS) compatible hornet.
The real meat of the testing was conducted over the Aberdeen Proving grounds where different ground vehicles where imaged in the open, then hidden under trees, camouflage netting, etc. and imaged again. The task was to locate the hidden vehicles. HSI, being a very powerful tool that in theory can tell the difference between green of foliage and the green of camouflage paint schemes, should be able to accomplish the task if enough photons get back to the sensor.
