Digital Imagery Exploitation and Production System (DIEPS)
Imagery Manipulation is occurring in greater volumes today. Government products such as MIG and COTS products such as ELT, VIPER and DIEPS are some of the packages available today. Electronic Light Table Applications are commercial imagery exploitation products that support imagery analyst training in exploitation techniques. Brand names include DIEPS, ELT2000, and VITAC. The Digital Imagery Exploitation and Production System (DIEPS) is an integrated digital imagery environment that enables users to acquire imagery from communication circuits and by conversion of hard copy to digital forms. Imagery can be stored, retrieved, enhanced, and disseminated.
DIEPS is a product of General Dynamics Electronic Systems (GTE sold their GSC division to General Dynamic in September 1999).
DIEPS functionality extends from NITFS 2 level 3 secondary imagery application through NITFS 2 level 6 functionality with CAWS/IDEX-like capabilities, continuous zoom/roam/rotate with unlimited image size, and IF200EA support. The Full frame option transforms existing UNIX workstations into add-on IDEX/RE workstations.
The DIEPS National Imagery Transmission Format Standard (NITFS) recertification was successfully completed on 21 October 1997. Recertification was conducted on Sun, DEC, SGI, HP, and NT platforms in the DIEPS Lab at Thousand Oaks, California by a team from the Joint Interoperability Test Center. This certification was valid for 2 years. All platforms were certified as Level 6 compliant. The test team identified 12 minor problems which were corrected during the test and 7 other items of concern which were to be addressed in future releases of DIEPS.
Ruler 6.0 and DIEPS 5.3 were integrated in Phase 1 to provide the same level of functionality currently supported with the previous version of Ruler. Completion of Phase 1 was available to users on the Classified Support CD in May 1998. In the second phase, the remaining Ruler 6.0 functions will be added to DIEPS 5.4, released in late 1998.
As of early 1998 DIEPS no longer supports Sun platforms running the SunOS effective with the release of DIEPS 5.4 at the end of 1998. Maintaining DIEPS support for this operating system is no longer cost effective due to its age and the low number of users running this operating system. DIEPS 5.4 continues to support SOLARIS 2.4 and 2.5 and will add support for SOLARIS 2.6.
