The National Bureau of Investigation has closed a criminal investigation into suspected unauthorised intelligence activities in Southeastern Finland in 2022. On the basis of the interviews and other investigative measures carried out, the investigation was closed and there is no reason to suspect an offence in the matter.
The National Bureau of Investigation has investigated a suspected offence committed at the end of September 2022. During the investigation, the police apprehended a Russian citizen at the border crossing point of Vaalimaa on suspicion of unauthorised intelligence activities. It was suspected that this person had exchanged sensitive information with an EU citizen.
- The police conducted interviews and other criminal investigative measures during the investigation and, on the basis of these measures, there is no reason to suspect that an offence was committed in the matter. Therefore, the criminal investigation was closed, says Detective Superintendent Risto Lohi of the National Bureau of Investigation.
The police opened the criminal investigation in September 2022 after receiving a report of the matter.
