German media say a Russian diplomat was found dead outside Russia's embassy in Berlin last month.

German police recovered the lifeless body of the 35-year-old man on the pavement on October 19, German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel reported on Friday. The magazine, which identified him as the second secretary at the embassy, said that he had fallen from an upper floor of the embassy building.

A German Foreign Ministry spokesman said the case was "known to the ministry" but would not provide further details.

The Russian Embassy confirmed the incident in a statement, saying it would "not be commenting on this tragic event for ethical reasons."

"All the procedures related to repatriating the diplomat's body back to the homeland were promptly settled with responsible German law-enforcement and medical authorities in accordance with current practices," said the embassy.

It was unclear how the diplomat had fallen and what had caused his death. According to the report, the embassy had not agreed to an autopsy.

Der Spiegel claimed that the man was an undercover agent of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB).

The Russian mission, however, said "it considers speculations which have appeared in a number of Western media" over the diplomat's death "to be absolutely incorrect."

German police also declined to comment and directed all questions to public prosecutors. Prosecutors said they could neither confirm nor deny Der Spiegel's claim.

Reacting to the report, a German Foreign Ministry spokesman told a regular news briefing on Friday that the German government was aware of the death of a the diplomat but could not provide any details.

The death had not previously been reported.
