The Rome court of appeals ruled that a Russian citizen, whose extradition is sought by Lisbon, will not be handed over to the Portuguese authorities, according to a source.
ROME (Sputnik) – An appeals court in the Italian capital dismissed Portugal's request to extradite a Russian citizen detained in late May on suspicion of espionage, a source familiar with court proceedings told RIA Novosti on Thursday.
"The Rome court of appeals ruled today that a Russian citizen, whose extradition is sought by Lisbon, will not be handed over to the Portuguese authorities," the source said without providing further details.
Italian media reported Sergei Pozdnyakov's detention in Rome at Lisbon's request, along with Frederico Carvalhao Gil, an official of the Portuguese Security Information Service. Gil, who was extradited to Portugal in late June, reportedly passed on NATO and EU political and economic information to Pozdnyakov.
The Russian Embassy in Italy is not commenting on the media reports, while a Russian press attache in Lisbon told RIA Novosti that Portugal had not informed Russia of its detained citizen's identity.
