Russia Expels U.S. Embassy Worker For Spy Recruitment

May 14, 2013

Russia has ordered an alleged agent of the United States' Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to leave the country.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on May 14 that the man, identified as Ryan Christopher Fogle, must return to the United States "as soon as possible."

It added that "such provocative actions in the spirit of the Cold War will by no means promote the strengthening of mutual trust" between Moscow and Washington.

Russia's Federal Security Service earlier said Fogle was briefly detained overnight for allegedly trying to recruit a Russian intelligence officer to work for the CIA.

It said that the Fogle worked "under cover" as third secretary of the U.S. embassy's political section.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has summoned the U.S. Ambassador Michael McFaul over the incident.

He declined to comment on the case during a Q&A session on Twitter.

News of the detention comes as Washington and Moscow are trying to improve relations and increasing security cooperation following the Boston Marathon bombing.
