NATO Loses Unmanned Helicopter Over Libya

June 21, 2011

NATO has said it lost contact with one of its unmanned helicopters over Libya but denied a Libyan state television report that one of its attack helicopters had gone down.

A NATO spokesman said the alliance's command center in Naples, Italy, lost track of an unmanned drone performing an intelligence-gathering and surveillance mission early on June 21 and was looking into the incident.

The spokesman, Mike Bracken, said NATO has not lost any attack helicopters during air operations in Libya.

"NATO confirms that it has not lost any attack helicopters during operation 'Unified Protector,'" Bracken said.

Libyan state television broadcast images of what appeared to be aircraft wreckage.

It quoted an unnamed Libyan military official saying a NATO Apache attack helicopter was shot down near Zlitan, some 40 kilometers west of the port city of Misurata held by rebels fighting Muammar Qaddafi's forces.
