Taipei, Feb. 8 (CNA) A one-star army general has been detained on espionage charges, the Ministry of National Defense said Monday. He is believed to be one of Taiwan's highest-ranking military officials to have allegedly spied for China in more than two decades.
Lo Hsien-che allegedly provided classified information to non-authorized personnel and was arrested after searches were conducted at his residence and office on January 25, according to Wang Ming-wo, acting director of the General Political Warfare Bureau.
After the suspect had been questioned, a military court granted the prosecutors' request for him to be detained.
Lo was recruited by Chinese agents when he was stationed overseas between 2002 and 2005, Wang told a press conference in the evening.
Wang would not say where Lo was stationed nor comment on press reports that the suspect had access to top secret documents related to the so-called Po Sheng program, which involves communication links between the armed forces of Taiwan and the United States.
It is not possible to assess any damage that may have been caused, Wang said. (By Emmanuelle Tzeng, Bear Lee and Jay Chen) Enditem/jc
