MP says US spies issue has nothing to do with Amiri

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, July 31, IRNA, -- A member of Iranian parliament, (Majlis) said the issue of 3 Americans who have been charged with spying in Iran has nothing to do with the case of Shahram Amiri.

He was referring to Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer, and Josh Fattal, three Americans who were arrested along the Iraqi borders last July and have been accused of spying by Iranian officials.

Shahram Amiri is an Iranian scientist who was abducted by the CIA agents in Saudi Arabia and transferred to US. He came back to Iran recently.

Spokesman of Majlis National Security and Foreign Relations Commission Kazem Jalali told IRNA on Saturday, “ US officials and western media are trying to make a connection between the case of Amiri and the three American spies, whereas the two issues are not related to each other.”

Kazemi said Amiri is an Iranian citizen who was abducted outside Iran. The case is actually a political scandal and a defeat for US intelligence organizations which has been revealed by Iran’s intelligence apparatus.

“The case of the three Americans are being investigated by Iran’s judiciary. They have entered Iran’s territory illegally and are accused of espionage,” said Kazemi.

“US returned Amiri to Iran after a defeat in intelligence war with Tehran and the case is quite different from the issue of the 3 Americans,” he said.
