German parliament to take up case of alleged CIA killer commandos
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, Jan 7, IRNA -- The domestic affairs committee of the German parliament is to deal with the issue of alleged CIA death squads in Germany when it meets on January 27, news reports said Thursday.
The topic will be placed on the agenda following a request by the fraction of The Left party (Die Linke), the chairman of the German parliament's domestic affairs committee, Wolfgang Bosbach was quoted saying.
Reacting to US press reports that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) used death squads to try to kill an alleged Hamburg-based al-Qaeda supporter in 2005, Bosbach labeled the claims "stunning" and "highly explosive," calling for a full investigation.
He also urged the German government to provide information on the case.
"We will ask the current government what information they have about it."
He warned that if the allegations proved to be true, it would have a "grave" impact on US-German relations.
The German government has claimed it had no knowledge about CIA-ordered killer commandos who attempted to murder alleged al-Qaeda financier, Mamoun Darkazanali in Hamburg.
Reacting to US reports that killer teams of the notorious private security firm, Blackwater, were contracted by the CIA to murder Darkazanli, the spokesperson of the chancellery told journalists in Berlin on Wednesday that he was unaware of such an assassination program.
"I am not aware of anything related to this issue," deputy government spokesman Christoph Steegmans was quoted saying.
He added any information he had on the allegations came "from media reports."
Officials with Germany's foreign ministry gave a similar answer. "We don't have any knowledge of the case," a spokesperson said.
The alleged CIA murder plot in Germany has become a major embarrassment to the government of Chancellor Angela Merkel since this was not the first incident where the US intelligence agency has used German territory to stage terror and kidnapping acts.
